Preparation
Cut from fawn felt (cut body double to a fold as pattern) 1 arm, 2 head, 2 palm, 2 foot front, 2 sole, 4 ear, 1 head gusset and 1 black nose.
How to make the felt toy Baby Bear – Sewing instructions
All seams are glove stitched on the right side unless otherwise stated.
Using two strands of fawn cotton, join the back seam from F to waist A, turn inside out and place the seam to the centre back.
Join inside leg seams B to A and A to B. Join curved foot front piece K to K on the front of each leg on the wrong side.
Join each shoulder seam from E for one inch. Appliqué a palm on each paw with button hole stitch. Make up the arms and sew into the armholes, matching E and G.
Backstitch a seam across the body just above the legs from A to A, thus giving a joint here. Stuff the legs and finish each foot with a felt sole. Stuff arms and body.
Make up the head, joining the seam from neck to H, insert the head gusset matching the seams H to J and to back of the neck.
Stuff the head quite hard. Secure the head to the body with a stitch or two at the centre front and centre back, and join, by taking up a stitch in the body and then one in the head, work around pulling the thread tight and at the same time turning in the raw edge.
Stitch around in this manner two or three times to make a strong join. Join two pieces for each ear and stitch to the head, curving them nicely.
Sew in the eyes, (front to back method in General Instructions) and stitch the nose into position. Using 6 strands of black cotton, work an inverted Y below the nose to indicate the mouth (see photograph).
Work black stitches for claws. Tie a bright bow around Baby Bear’s neck.
